"Woodworking is not for the faint of heart. It requires a mathematician's grasp of detail, an artist's aesthetic judgment, and a careful nonchalance around those buzzing, whining power tools. Carpentry and the like even scarier if you have recurring spinning saw blade nightmares. It's no coincidence, then, that the folks at carpentry-equipment outfitter Skarie Inc. designed a logo featuring a deep-red (or is that blood-red?) radial-saw blade. With a little familiarity, though, those table saws and routers lose their frightening edges. And what about that name? It's just the surname of Eugene Skarie, who founded the downtown store in 1946. We're glad businesses such as Skarie persist, stalwarts of handmade practicality in a sea of names that represent nothing: Verizon, Allfirst, Sprint, Enron . . . truly scary names."
